A GIRL IN THE BACKSEAT

A friend of my mom’s friend is a taxi driver in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Her name is Monica. Like many taxi drivers, Monica has amazing stories. The story I’m going to tell you is true. This really happened to Monica.

Monica was driving a taxi home  after a long day. At exactly midnight, she was passing primavera cemetery and saw a women in black dress holding her arm out for a taxi. She stopped the taxi and the women got in the back seat. She introduced herself as carol. Carol asked Monica to drive to her parent’s house on Boa Vista Street. During the whole trip, carol asked weird questions about death. Sometimes Monica looked back at carol just to see her face, but it was too dark and she couldn’t see it. Monica also started to smell flowers in her car. It was the kind of smell that reminds you of a cemetery.

When they got to the home of carol’s parents, carol asked Monica to wit while she went inside to get some money. Monica waited fifteen minutes. Then she went to the door and knocked three times. A man about 50 years old, wearing pajamas, answered the door. Monica said, “I’m waiting for carol, your daughter.” The men’s eyes filled with tears. “Is this a bad joke?” he said. “I did have daughter named carol, but her funeral was at primavera Cemetery ten  years ago today. She died in a taxi accident.”
